New Hope – Wyatt W. Mills, 76, died on Monday, September 5, 2011, at Community Hospice, Verona. Born on March 15, 1935, in the Evergreen Community of Itawamba County, he was a son of the late Woodrow and Jessie Martin Mills.
Growing up in the Evergreen Community, Mr. Mills was a graduate of Itawamba County Agricultural High School, Class of 1952, and of Itawamba Junior College. He served as a Mississippi Highway Patrolman for 18 years. Moving to New Hope, he was the manager of Merchant Truck Lines until they closed. Mr. Mills then worked as a manager for Consolidated Freightways and left to become a Parole Officer for the State of Mississippi. Having a love for politics and having never met a stranger, he had qualified to run for the 2011 Justice Court Judge in Lowndes County and had to withdraw because of health reasons. Mr. Mills was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, New Hope. A good provider, his family was very important to him. A compassionate yet stern man, Mr. Mills believed in always doing the right thing and pulling for the underdog. He was a Mason and a Shriner. Mr. Mills enjoyed Gospel music as well as sitting and talking with people.
He is survived by his wife and soul mate, Sue Swan Mills, New Hope; daughter, Teresa Clay, Amory; sons, Tim Mills, Peppertown, Scotty Mills, Mississippi, and Mark Clay (Julie), Amory; brother, Jimmie Dale Mills, Tupelo; daughter-in-law, Chrissie Mills, Pulaski, TN; nine grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Pastor Sonny Mills.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 PM, Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Ralph Windle officiating and Bro. Tommy Whaley. Burial will be in Haughton Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Mike Smith, Bill Cole, Jim Kibe, Reggie Swan, Nathan Blevins, Clint Alan Clay, and Tyler Clay. Honorary pallbearers will be the Mississippi Department of Corrections and El Rancho staff and coffee buddies.
Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials should be given to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
