Amory - Willie Jo “Mama Jo” Martin, 92, died on Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center. Born on July 31, 1918, in the Sugg Community of Monroe County, she was a daughter of the late William H. White and Sally Sugg White Whitaker.
She was a graduate of Hatley High School where she was a star basketball player and the Senior class president. Mrs. Martin was the Senior Quality Control inspector for TIL/Longneckers, retiring in 1993. She was a faithful member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, having served on the Administrative Board, as president of the UMW, as a Sunday school teacher and a devoted prayer chain member. A loving and giving lady, she was an avid reader, enjoy ed flower gardening and listening to Christian music. Mrs. Martin loved her Lord, family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Darwin Ausbon, Florida, Jo Ann Summerlin, Brandon, and Sammy “Sam” Vaughan, Sr., & his wife, Cindy, Columbus; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Polly Moore, Oak Ridge, TN; and several beloved cousins, church family, and friends.
A funeral service for Willie Jo Martin will be held at 3:30 PM, Sunday at St. Andrews United Methodist Church with Rev. Aubrey Boren and Rev. Tim Sisk officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Summerlin, Sammy Ray Vaughan, Charles D. Turner, Keith Whitaker, Chris Fair and Billy Beard. Honorary pallbearers will be Harry and Joe Sugg, Joe, Zach and Jared McGonagill, Charlie Riley, Warner Hester, Thomas Griffith, Ray Jones and Ralph Salter.
Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to St. Andrews United Methodist Church, 1123 Veterans Legion Dr., Amory, MS 38821.
