Wren – William G. “Bitsy” Payne, 76, died on Monday, October 20, 2014, at NMMC, Tupelo. Born on July 8, 1938, in Nettleton, he was a son of the late Joe Raymond and Lucille Young Payne.
Growing up in Nettleton, he was a graduate of Nettleton High and a member of the 1958 Tigers football Tombigbee Conference Champions. Coached by his good friend, Jack Carlisle, they were the highest scoring Mississippi team with 413 points. Recruited by Bear Bryant, Mr. Payne chose to play football at IJC so he could be in school with his sister. He married Nancy Rieves on May 31, 1963, and they moved to Wren in 1974. After 26 years of service, he retired from the Army National Guard 155th Armored Brigade in Nettleton. Following 35 years of service, he retired as a supervisor with Tombigbee Electric Power Association. Mr. Payne was a member of First Baptist Church, Nettleton. He enjoyed sitting on the porch watching all of God’s creatures, loved his granddaughters, horses, and working in his shop building birdhouses.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Rieves Payne, Wren; son, Glen Payne (Kay), Little Rock, AR; daughter, Beth Payne, Wren; granddaughters, Morgan and Rieves Payne, Little Rock, AR; sister, Catherline Payne, Nettleton; brother, Jimmy Payne (Dianne), Nettleton; several nieces & nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Sammy Joe Payne, and sister, Johnnie Fae McDaniel, who were all from Nettleton.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM, Thursday, October 23 at First Baptist Church, Nettleton with Bro. Donald Pounders officiating. Burial will be in Haughton Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Lance and Ryan Payne, Ricky Finley, Tommy White, and former and present employees of TEPA.
Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Payne will lie-in-state at the church from 9 AM until the service hour, Thursday.
