– Virginia Newell Cole, 90, died on Sunday, August 7, 2011, at her residence. Born on November 2, 1920, in Inverness, MS, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Samuel Doak and Orrie Wamble Newell. Mrs. Cole was a graduate of Inverness High School and the University of Mississippi with a degree in music. She taught music in the Shaw, MS, Public School System until marrying Thomas J. Cole, Jr., in 1943. A dedicated and faithful member of First Baptist Church, she served as a choir director, a Sunday school teacher and the church organist. Mrs. Cole’s life was guided by her faith in God and by her parents. An amazing, sweet, and gracious lady, she was a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer, former PTA president, Boy Scout Den Mother, Junior Auxiliary member, and a member of Prairie Girl Scout Council. Mrs. Cole enjoyed playing the piano and organ and listening to traditional Christian church music and classical music. She cherished the time spent with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters, Annette Phillips (Darrell), Crystal Springs, and Betty Cole, Beaufort, NC; son, Tommy Cole, Amory; brother, Dean Newell, Inverness; grandchildren, Anne Tindall, Silver Spring, MD, Liz Harden Mills, Carrboro, NC, Aaron Gentry, Athens, GA, and Shelley Gentry, Houston, TX; great-grandchildren, Sadie and Miles Tindall, and Walter Mills; nieces and nephews, Anne Newell, Dr. Sam Newell, Virginia N. Cunningham, David Hodo, and Doug Hodo. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Cole, Jr., in 2000, and a brother, William Newell. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 AM, Wednesday, August 10 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Jim Futral and Dr. Allen Simpson officiating. Burial will follow in Masonic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mark Duncan, Johnny Leech, Larry Goudelock, Johnny Frank Turman, Jerry Maxey, Jerry Reese, Tommy Parish, Steve Greenhaw, and Tommy Tapp. Honorary pallbearer will be Regan Fikes. Mrs. Cole will lie in state from 8:30AM until the service hour on Wednesday. Visitation will be from 6 - 8 PM, Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to a church or charity of choice.
