Velera Mae Moreland, a beloved seamstress and cherished matriarch, departed this world on January 1, 2025, at the age of 98, in Haleyville, Alabama. Born on May 22, 1926, in Beaverton, Alabama, she ultimately became a cornerstone of her community and an inspiration to her family and friends.
A graduate of Sulligent High School, class of 1949, she approached life with boundless determination, grit, and an infectiously sweet demeanor. With a remarkable dedication to her craft, Mae devoted 27 years of her life to sewing, bringing to life countless creations that adorned the proud figures of those around her. Her work took her through the vibrant streets of Detroit and the quaint towns of Sulligent and Beaverton in Alabama, where she was known not just for her skills but for her warm spirit.
Mae’s hobbies reflected her nurturing nature; she found joy in sewing, embraced the daily challenge of puzzle books, and cultivated her love for reading the Bible. She had a penchant for visiting auctions, where she enjoyed the thrill of discovery, but perhaps her greatest delight came from the time spent with her grandchildren, imparting wisdom and love that will resonate through generations.
She is survived by her son, William Joseph Collier; granddaughters, Misty Dawn Clark, Cassandra Marie Collier, and Jessica Belle Collier; and great-grandchildren, Kayla Williams, Alexis Clark, Ashley Clark, Daniel Clark, Piper Studdard, Dorian Studdard, and Penelope Studdard. Their lives are forever enriched by her legacy of hard work, love, and resolute faith.
Mae is preceded in death by her parents, Greely and Selma Lockhart Minor; her first husband, Floyd Collier; and her second husband, George Moreland. Their memories remain eternal in the hearts of those who loved her, as does the indelible mark she left on the world through her unwavering spirit and loving nature.
