Amory – Una Sloan Newton, 96, died on Thursday, August 7, 2014, at Golden Living Center. Born on August 17, 1917, in Monroe County, she was a daughter of the late John Gainey and Dora Belle Ridings Sloan.
Mrs. Newton worked as a seamstress in the area garment industry, as a retail clerk, and later as an Avon representative. A God-fearing lady, she was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church. Loving, sweet, strong and sassy, Mrs. Newton enjoyed her family, Bible study, attending church and family reunions. An animal lover, she was passionate about genealogy, contributing to the History of Monroe County and Lamar County genealogy books, flowers, and getting an education. She was proud of receiving her GED at age 77. Learning to drive at age 56, Mrs. Newton was an excellent seamstress who enjoyed sewing, gardening, yard work, listening to hymns and Bluegrass Gospel, and sharing pictures. The last survivor of ten children, she loved by doing for others.
Survivors include her daughters, Gail Carter (Bobby), Amory, Linda Little (Herbert), Smithville, and Beverly Kemp (Melvin), Amory; son, Perry Newton (Linda K.), Amory; grandchildren, Nina Huffman, Cindy Falvey, Tim Little, Melanie Edwards, Amy Jo Holcomb, Emily Comer; great-grandchildren, Laura Vaughan; Kyle Huffman; McCoy Holcomb; Nate and Lily Comer; Sonja and Drew Falvey; Anthony and Nathan Little; Breanna Edwards; Malarie Dean; Rylin Little; Kaylee and T. J. Holland; great-great-grandchildren, Kaylin Little and Samuel Lee Cain; many nieces and nephews; and caregivers at Golden Living.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Bill Newton; grandsons, Barry and Kevin Sims; 4 brothers and 5 sisters.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, August 9 at Meadowood Baptist Church with Bro. Chuck Moffett officiating. Burial will follow in Haughton Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Kyle and Mike Huffman; Timmy and Anthony Little; Drew and Tex Falvey. Honorary pallbearers will be Nathan Little, Rush Holcomb, Terry Comer and Bobby Edwards.
Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Friday at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home, Amory. Mrs. Newton will lie-in-state at the church from 10 AM until the service hour.
