Tommy Swan

Tommy Swan

Becker – Roy Thomas “Tommy” Swan, 86, joined his beloved wife, Beulah, in Heaven, where they will enjoy eternity together with Jesus, on Friday, October 3, 2014. This is something they both looked forward to with anticipation. Born on December 13, 1927, in the Carolina Community, Tommy was the 5th child of Lafroy Copeland and Grady Swan.

His father, Grady, died when he was just 3 months old, leaving his mother to raise 5 children in Depression-era Mississippi. Those tough times forged a strong bond of love between Tommy, his mother and siblings that is rarely seen. This special bond of love for each other remained throughout their lives. Tommy was a graduate of Nettleton High School, Class of 1946. On February 13, 1948, he married Beulah Elizabeth Miller. Tommy had a very successful career in the local garment industry, working his way up to plant manager. Taking great pride in his work, he truly loved working with and being around people. After his career in the garment industry, he opened Tommy’s Menswear in Amory, which he operated until retiring in 1990.

Tommy will be remembered by all of his friends and family for his great sense of humor and outgoing personality. Rarely meeting a stranger, he was sincerely interested in everyone he met. He was a loving and devoted husband to his wife. To his 4 children, he was the best example of what a father should be. To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was the best and most loving “Papaw” a kid could ever love. Faithful in his walk with the Lord, Tommy would tell you the most aspect of his life was being a Christian. He was a longtime member and former Deacon of Becker Baptist Church. Tommy was a man respected, admired and loved by all those that were fortunate to know him.

When his wife of 63 years died on February 22, 2012, a little bit of Tommy died as well. Often after her death he would ask, “I wonder what Beulah is doing now?” Reunited for eternity, he no longer has to wonder anymore.

Survivors include his daughter, Wanda Simpson (Dell), Knoxville, TN; sons, Gary Swan (Phyllis), Barry Swan (Fonda), of Becker, and Jerry Swan (Martha), Collierville, TN; grandchildren, Philip Swan; Kimberly McCoy; Jeremy Swan; Trey and Matt Simpson; Drew, Tom, Anna, Will and Walt Swan; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Taylor McCoy; Sadie and Maddie Swan; many nieces & nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Harold, Opal, Clay, Richard and an infant sister.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2 PM, Monday, October 6 at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Randy Spencer, Bro. George Hensley and Bro. David Jay officiating. Burial will follow in Haughton Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Philip, Drew, Tom and Jeremy Swan; Trey and Matt Simpson. Honorary pallbearers will be Coy Gosa, Eugene Haney, Reggie Swan, Paul Barrett, Bobby Crosby, Wayne Thompson, Charles Tubb, Raymond Westmoreland, Ken Schoolar and Richard Pearson.
