Quincy – Silas Tom Carter, 97, died on Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at his residence. Born on February 26, 1917, in Monroe County, he was a son of the late Andrew Jackson and Ila Spears Carter.
A lifelong resident of the Quincy Community, he married Eva Lou Thatcher on March 12, 1938. Mr. Carter was a farmer and carpenter, having built many homes in Monroe County. He worked as a presser until retiring from Blue Bell. A former Deacon and Sunday school teacher, Mr. Carter was a member of Rocky Springs Baptist Church. Very passionate about all of his grandchildren, he was a hard-worker who was comical, considerate, very wise in looking ahead and known for his routine. He enjoyed fishing, tending to his farm, and visits from his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his son, Bruce Carter (Barbara), Quincy; daughters, Betty Jane Cruber Tucker (Robert), Amory, and Judy Howell (Wayne), Hatley; grandchildren, Brent Rainey, Michelle Younker, Sam Howell, Janet Smith, Rennie Lee Ann Smith, Teresa Isaac, Denice Walton, Amanda Mitchell, Crystal Ward and Rachel Boyd; 23 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Venora, Leora and Mildred; and brothers, Clark, Sam and Andrew.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2 PM, Friday, December 12 at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home, Amory with Bro. Alvie Isaac and Bro. Donald Edge officiating. Burial will follow in Haughton Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Brent Rainey, Sam Howell, Josh Ward, Russell Smith, Scott Mitchell and Ben Boyd. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Rocky Springs Baptist Church and his caregivers, Geneva Luker and Margie Wright.
Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Thursday at the funeral home.
