Sally Scribner Prude

Sarah “Sally” Scribner Prude

Sally was born on March 25, 1926 in Amory, MS. After a long illness, Sally died peacefully on September 4, 2023.

Sally was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Amory. For the better part of two decades, Sally was actively involved in the business of Cadence Bank, both as a Director and as a member of the Executive Committee. For many decades, Sally served as Secretary and Treasurer of Scribner Equipment Company, Inc., a heavy equipment construction business founded by her father. An avid reader herself, Sally was involved for many years as a director of the Board of Amory Municipal Library. Additionally, Sally volunteered her time as a member of the Amory Historic Cemetery Foundation Board.

Sally married James Oscar Prude in 1948 and they were happily married for 39 years until his death in 1987. Sally and J.O. had 3 children who were all born at Gilmore Hospital in Amory. Except for the time that she and J.O. resided in Charlottesville, VA while he attended The University of Virginia Law School, Sally lived her entire life in Monroe County.

Sally was a 1944 graduate of Amory High School, attended Sullins College in Bristol, VA and later transferred to the University of Mississippi. When Sally graduated from Ole Miss in 1948, she and Jane Dalrymple, also of Amory, were two of a small group of female graduates from the University.

Sally was a fun-loving person who never met a stranger. She enjoyed dressing up and celebrating most any occasion with a glass of Champagne. Sally had a passion for travel, but always loved returning to Amory to be with her family and friends. Sally and her husband were fond of playing couples bridge with their many friends, and she continued to enjoy playing card games with various groups of ladies after J.O. passed. Sally was very generous to her family, church and community but sought no recognition for her generosity.

Surviving family members include her son, James Roland Prude (Lynn) of Dallas, TX; her daughter, Sarah Prude Nabors (Dennis) of New Orleans, LA; three grandchildren, Ann Brownlee Leineweber of Greenville, SC; Robert McCreery Leineweber, Jr. (Ann Douglas) of Hendersonville, NC; and William Scribner Leineweber (Holly) of Athens, GA. Sally was the favorite great grandmother to Sarah and Kate Leineweber and to Oskar and Wyatt Leineweber.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents, James R. “Scrib” Scribner and Millie, her brother James R. “Bur” Scribner, Jr., her husband James Oscar “J.O.” Prude, and a son Winston B. Prude.

The family would like to pay a debt of gratitude to Sally’s long time caregivers, Christina Felton and Jacqueline Sims. Special thanks also go to First Methodist Church members Sheila Creekmore and Laura Williams for their efforts in making holidays and other celebratory events memorable for Sally.

Sally was a longtime advocate for children’s education and provided opportunities for all of her descendants to obtain the highest level of education possible. During her lifetime, Sally also established the Sarah Scribner Prude Charitable Fund. In her memory, the family has elected to award an annual scholarship to an Amory High School graduate to attend a college or university in the state of Mississippi.

A celebration of life service for Sally will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at Amory First Methodist Church with Reverend Wesley Pepper and Brother Don McCain officiating. Burial will follow in the Amory Historical Society Cemetery, Amory, MS. Visitation for Ms. Prude will be held from 2:00 p.m. until the service hour at the church on Tuesday. Serving as pallbearers will be Will Leineweber, Dennis Nabors, Al Alexander, Jon Alexander, Hob Bryan and Ron Perkins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Amory/Monroe County Disaster Relief Fund to provide support to the thousands of people in Amory and Monroe County impacted by the devastating tornado on March 24, 2023. Individuals may contribute online at www.create foundation.com, over the phone at 662-844-8989 or by mailing a check to CREATE Foundation at P.O. Box 1053, Tupelo, MS 38802. Sally’s surviving family members have pledged to match all contributions to the Amory/Monroe County Disaster Relief Fund that are made in her memory.
