Roy C. Wells, Sr.
Amory – Roy C. Wells, Sr., 95, died on Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Columbus. Born on July 17, 1916, in Jacksonville, AL, he was the son of the late Robert and Ruby Wells.
Mr. Wells was married to the former Ruth Evelyn Nash for 73 years until her passing in February 2011. Roy worked at the Firestone Retail Store in Memphis as a mechanic specializing in brakes and front-end components. He worked there for 27 years until Parkinson’s disease forced early retirement. He absolutely loved his work and the people he was able to help along the way. His hours were long, but never once did anyone in the family hear him complain about the work or the pay. Always very proud of his service to our country, Roy spent a short time in the Army during World War II. Although he never went to combat because the war ended, he was set to go to the Pacific Theatre prior to his discharge. He had his priorities right: God, family, friends, and work, in that order. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He became a Christian late in life, but for some 35 years or so after he gave his life to the Lord, he never looked back. Even when he was prevented from attending church on a regular basis due to his health or the health of Ruth, he always continued to listen to the sermons by cassette tapes, and he kept up with the Bible study as long as his health allowed.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, April 7 E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Mr. Philip Hathcock, minister, officiating. Burial will follow in Young Memorial Garden. Pallbearers will be Edward Best, Dexter Butler, Harold Cooper, Michael Simpson, Jimmy Vaughn, and Ray Warren.
Visitation will be from 5 – 7 PM, Friday at the funeral home.
He is survived by his sons, Gene (Frances) Wells, Memphis, Roy C. Wells Jr., Parkersburg, WV, and Phillip (Nancy) Wells, Paris, TN; four sisters, Willene Burch, Eunice Segal, Aillene Pitts, and Margaret McDonald; a brother, Robert Wells; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and numerous church friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; his daughter, Erma Henderson; his grandson, Roy Wells, III; a brother, William Wells; and a sister, Elsie Widner.
