Smithville – Robert Summerford, 75, died on Thursday, August 26, 2010, at North MS Medical Center. Born on November 25, 1934, in Itawamba County, he was a son of the late Ernie Clevis & Reba Irene Harris Summerford.
A very outgoing and fun-loving person, Mr. Summerford never met a stranger. He was a graduate of Smithville High School, Class of 1952. Mr. Summerford honorably served his country in the US Marine Corps and was a member of the DAV. After 30 years of service, he retired from Walker Manufacturing. Strong in his faith, Mr. Summerford was an active member of Wildwood Baptist Church. Always willing to help others, he loved spending time with his granddaughter, enjoyed talking with people, being outdoors and fishing.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marilyn Summerford and son, Phil Summerford, Smithville; daughter, Mitzy (Mike) Whalen, Amory; brothers, Doyle & Eulon Summerford, Smithville; granddaughter, Allyson Hill, Tupelo; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant brothers.
A funeral service for Robert Summerford will be held at 1 PM, Sunday at Wildwood Baptist Church with Bro. Chuck Moffett and Bro. Larry Galloway officiating. Burial will follow in Haughton Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Marlin, Keith, Ronnie & Tony Summerford, Mike Walden and J. L. Cowley.
Visitation will be Saturday from 5 – 8 PM at the funeral home in Smithville. Mr. Summerford will lie in state at the church from 12:30 PM until the service hour.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Wildwood Baptist Church, Amory, MS 38821-0652.
