Smithville – Rafel Marshal “Bub” Rieves, 79, died on Tuesday, February 1, 2011, at his residence. Born on April 18, 1931, in Smithville, he was a son of the late Ham Marshal and Valera Alice Young Rieves. A lifelong resident of Smithville, Mr. Rieves attended Smithville Public Schools and a member of Smithville United Methodist Church. He honorably served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Following forty years of working as a Brakeman, Conductor and a Yard Master, Mr. Rieves retired from Frisco-Burlington Northern Railroad to devote time to his passion of farming. A simple yet hardworking man, he lived life to the fullest, cherished his time spent with family and enjoyed watching Gospel Channel 39. One with nature, Mr. Rieves admired nature’s beauty, loved shepherding his horses and cattle, and being outside. He is survived by his daughters, Barbara Rachelle(Craig) Jones, Amory and Rebecca (Chris) Waterer, MD, Jackson; son, Capt. Rafel Dwaine Rieves, MD, Washington, DC; sisters, Margaret Haney, Grand Bay, AL, Marie Tubb and Mavis Parham, Hatley; grandchildren, Christopher Craig Jones, Amory, Joy Kate Waterer and Henry Christmas “Hank” Waterer, IV, Jackson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Joy Taylor Rieves in 2004. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 PM, Saturday at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home, Smithville with Rev. Charles Coggins officiating. Burial will follow in Young Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be W. H. Gregory, Ira Kennedy, Jim Young, Jimmy Cowley, John Gipson, and Larry Cox. Honorary pallbearers will be Denver Wright, John Chrestman and Thomas Carroll. This 501c3 fund was established in 2004 to provide scholarships to students at Smithville Public Schools who pursue a career in health care.
