Percy Wayne Harlow

Percy Wayne Harlow
Amory – Percy Wayne Harlow, 92, began his new life in Heaven and was reunited with his family on Friday, July 14, 2023. He was born on February 11, 1931, in Wren, Mississippi to the late James Percy Harlow and Nadine Gallop Harlow.
Percy grew up in Monroe County, one of four siblings, and he attended Wren and Aberdeen Schools, graduating from Aberdeen High School. Percy was very independent, a good ole Country Boy who was tough as nails. He was a man of few words, not boastful, and when he did speak it was straight forward. He was a proud patriot, loved his country and served in the United States Army as a Sergeant, serving in the Korean War. He received a Combat Infantry Badge and a Korean Service Medal with a Service Star. He was also a member of the local chapter of the Veterans Association for many years.
For many years he worked as a Maintenance Tech at Gilmore and Baptist Memorial Hospitals in Columbus, MS. Percy also worked at Firestone Manufacturing and at one point they sent him to work in Africa for several years. Before retiring completely, Percy liked to get out on the open road while he delivered cars part-time for Larry Clark.
He met the love of his life, Joean McCary Harlow, in 1964 at the skating rink in Wren, MS. They were later married on August 28, 1952, and together they were blessed with a son. Percy loved God and was a member of Amory Presbyterian Church. His family and faith meant the world to him and later in his life, his great grandson Harlow was his world.
When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed listening to Old Country music, fishing, hunting for both pheasant and duck, and just trying to fix anything. An active man in many ways, he loved getting involved in politics and the different issues facing our great country. In addition to his family, his friends, whom he met almost every morning at Country Boys Restaurant, meant so much to him, including Lee Cadden, John Finn, Larry Clark, Ray Gallop, and Buddy Gallop. He had a soft spot for animals, caring for many cats and dogs through the years, and helping out the Amory and Aberdeen Humane Societies.
Percy was a fine man who served his country proudly. His family and friends will miss him dearly but they know that he was ready to start his new life, completely healed and at peace. He will be missed dearly.
He is survived by his granddaughter, Joanna Harlow Staten (Brian), West Point; great-grandson, Harlow Brian Ellis, West Point; 2 step great-grandchildren, Tyler Staten and Alexis Staten, West Point; foster daughter, Lois Midkiff; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Percy was preceded in death by his loving wife, Joean McCary Harlow; son, Jeffrey Wayne Harlow; siblings, Vivian Harlow Brooks, Raymond Harlow and Eloise Harlow Williams.
A Celebration of Life Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at 2:00 pm, at Amory Masonic Cemetery, Amory, Mississippi with Dr. Tom Cheatham officiating.
