Peggy Worthy Plunkett

Peggy Jo Worthy Plunkett passed into glory on November 15, 2022, at the Brookdale Senior Living Facility in Tavares, Florida. She was born at her grandmother’s house in Northview, Missouri, on June 23, 1929, to S.M. and Hazel Atkinson Worthy. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of many years N.F. “Butch” Plunkett, her brother John M. Worthy, Sr., her sister Helen Worthy Martin, and her beloved dog Roger.

Peggy graduated from Amory High School in 1947. She was an honor student, a majorette, and a student athlete. Peggy played softball and basketball. She was so proud of being a member of the AHS team that won the Little Ten Championship in basketball. After high school, she moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where she worked first as the private secretary to an insurance executive. Soon, however, she went to work for the Frisco Railroad, first as a PBX operator and later as a payroll specialist handling payrolls for Memphis, Birmingham, and all areas in between. She and her husband Butch lived in Birmingham for many years where her beautifully cared for lawn was selected as a Yard of the Month.

One of the highlights of Peggy’s life was attending the inauguration of Ronald Reagan when her husband was honored as one of a group of extraordinary citizens. Butch was the Truck Driver of the Year, having driven for Chevron for forty years with no accidents and not even one ticket!

When Butch became very ill and entered the Veteran’s Retirement Home outside Oxford, Mississippi, Peggy moved back to her childhood home on Fifth Street North in Amory. She loved that house and all the wonderful memories of her happy childhood. While in Amory she continued her love of flowers and again her home was honored as a Yard of the Month. She also was a member of the Frisco Club. Peggy was kind and generous. She helped many people but never sought credit for her gifts of money and love. She was a true Christian who lived what she believed. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Midfield, Alabama, and later of the North Boulevard Christian Church in Amory, Mississippi.

She is survived by her nieces Susan Martin of Mount Dora, Florida, Wanda Worthy Lawrence of West Plains, Missouri, and her nephew John M. Worthy, Jr., also of West Plains, Missouri. Peggy was a great lady who lived a long life. She will be reverently remembered.

Visitation will be held at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory, Mississippi, on Monday evening, November 21, 2022, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Funeral Services will be on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with burial to follow in Amory Historical Society Cemetery. Dr. Paul Dorsey of Wylie, Texas, will officiate. Pall bearers will be John M. Worthy, Jr., nephew of Mrs. Plunkett, Jonathan Lawrence and Tank Lawrence, great nephews, Stan Vernon and Danny Randolph, husbands of her cousins, and Steve Hunt, Peggy’s dear friend.
