Peggy Dear Oakes

Amory - Peggy Dear Oakes, 84, died Tuesday, January 20 at the Golden Living Nursing Home in Amory. Born on February 1, 1930, in Columbus, though she spent her childhood in Meridian, she was a daughter of the late John William and Mary Elizabeth Covington Dear.

She accomplished a great deal in her 84 years. After attending Meridian High School, Meridian Junior College, and the Mississippi State College for Women, she went on to earn her bachelor's degree from the University of Mississippi in 1950. Nearly three decades later, she returned to school at the Mississippi University for Women to become a Registered Nurse and graduated in 1979. She started a new career at the age of 49 and went on to work as a nurse at both Golden Triangle Regional Medical Center in Columbus and River Oaks Hospital in Jackson. She retired in 1996.

Throughout her life, Peggy was known for her beautiful soprano singing voice, her wonderful cooking, and her graceful ability to host a party. She was gregarious and cheerful, loved to tell a story, and could charm anyone who happened to cross her path with her warm smile.

She started her family in Ackerman, though she moved to Amory in 1962 and lived there, with the exception of her years spent in Jackson, for the rest of her life. She was a proud and active member of the Amory community, particularly the Methodist Church.

Nothing brought her more joy than being with her loud and loving family. She is survived by her four children: Cathy Oakes Brock (David), Elizabeth Oakes (Mark Godwin), Tom Oakes, and Cindy Oakes Hester (Dan); four grandchildren: Wil Oakes, Ashley Oakes Briggs (Jason), Anna Hester, and Nathan Oakes; as well as three great-grandchildren: Christian McHale Dunne, Scarlett Evelyn Stephenson, and John Carter Coker.

Her bright spirit will be greatly missed and remembered by those who loved her long after she is gone.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM, Friday, January 23 at First United Methodist Church, Amory with Rev. Jimmy Criddle officiating.

Visitation will be from 9:30 – 10:50 AM on Friday at the church.

Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 147, Amory, MS 38821 or to French Camp Academy, 1 Fine Place, French Camp, MS 39745.
