Opal G. Carter

Amory – Opal G. Carter, 93, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2015, at his residence. Born on December 12, 1921, in Amory, he was a son of Lucas and Zula Tubb Carter.

Mr. Carter left Hatley School to join the US Army during World War II. The oldest living WWII veteran in Monroe County, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and in the Battle of Bastogne. Mr. Carter was honorably discharged on January 1, 1949. On May 25, 1947, while on leave, he married Ruth McCullough. Hard-working and caring, Mr. Carter was dedicated to God, his Country, and his family. After working with Longnecker’s, Frisco Railroad, and Pullman Couch, he owned and operated Carter Upholstery from 1959 – 2001.

Mr. Carter was a Deacon and member of Bigbee Baptist Church. In addition to being a member of American Legion Post #25, he had been a member of The Civitans, Gideon’s, and attended First Friends. Mr. Carter was known for being funny as well as his aggravating and mischievousness. Very loving, he cherished spending time with and spoiling his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening, cooking turnip greens and giving them away, sharing produce with friends, and taking his 1 PM nap. Fond of traveling with his wife, they had the opportunity to visit all 48 Continental States.

Survivors include his wife and best friend of 68 years, Ruth Carter, Amory; daughter, Cheryl Stegall (Donald), Amory; grandchildren, Leslie Morgan (Hal), Jessica Parker (Keith), Emily Bird (Anthony), Christy Coker, Johnny Stegall (Kathy), Crystal Dension, Shane Stegall, Amanda Moore (Michael), and Trevor Stegall (Melanie); great-grandchildren, Jonathan Morgan (Anna), Taylor Mann, Jared Mann, Karlie Parker, and Emma Grace Bird; several nieces and nephews; caregivers, Sandra Worthington and the nurses at Legacy Hospice.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Egger; and brothers, Troy, Willard, Dell, and Trent Carter.

His Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home, Amory, with Bro. Justin Haynes officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Hatley Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jonathan Morgan, Jared Mann, Leon Carter, Shelby Carter, Scotty Carter, Jerry Carter, and Hal Bourland. Honorary pallbearers will be Terry and Andy Carter, and Mike Riley; the nurses at Legacy Hospice; and First Friends Staff.

Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Tuesday, and from 10 AM until the service hour at the funeral home.
