Amory – Olema J. Powell, 99, died on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, at Golden Living Center. Born on December 28, 1911, in Itawamba County, she was a daughter of the late Napoleon B. and Texie Wheeler Johnson.
Mrs. Powell attended Clay School in Itawamba County and married John Woodson Powell on December 20, 1936. A strong, marvelous, and wonderful mother, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Powell was a member of Christian Chapel Church of Christ. A great example of a lady, Mrs. Powell’s life was centered on her faith and her family. She enjoyed being outside and working in her flowers, gardening, sewing, cooking, reading, and listening to Gospel music.
She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Adams (Robert), Amory; sons, Bo Powell (Linda), Amory John Powell, Virginia Beach, VA, and James Powell (Shirley), Amory; sister, Ruby Mills, Fulton; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Edward Powell; sisters, Vonzie Taylor and Cloa Tucker; brother, Hubert Johnson; granddaughter, Lisa Ann Neal; grandsons, Steve Adams and Lance Powell; and daughter-in-law, Carrie Powell.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 PM, Friday, October 7, 2011, at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Mr. Marshall Eubanks, Jr., and Mr. David Highland officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Alexander and Nicholas Comer, Joey and Jason Umfress, Patrick and Kevin Powell, and Tony Thompson. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Powell and Tommy Smith.
Visitation will be from 5 - 8 PM, Thursday at the funeral home.
