Amory—Ottis Winford Burroughs, 100, passed away on August 1, 2017 at Riverplace Nursing Home. He was born on January 21, 1917, in Republic, Alabama as a son of a sharecropper. During his career, he worked for the Frisco Railroad as well as a self-employed farmer and carpenter. He also worked as a set-up man with Palmer Concrete, where he retired in 1963. O.W. was a member of First Baptist Church in Amory.
O.W. was known as a hard-working man, and was selfless and kind to others. He enjoyed telling a good story to a willing audience, and doted on his loving family. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening, especially tomatoes, squash, and peppers. Up until O.W. was 96, he mowed his own yard. He married his wife, Vera Grace May Burroughs, and she passed away in 2003. O.W. lived a long and happy life, and he left a mark on each person that crossed his path. He will be remembered fondly by his family.
Survivors include daughter, Brenda Harris Rohdy (Mike); grandchildren, Karen Walls (Ronald), Kim Oliver, both of Amory, Tasha Rohdy Whitehead (Scott), Michael Rohdy (Katherine); great-grandchildren, Nathan Whitaker, Emily Whitaker, and Ryan Walls, all of Amory, Peyton and Ashley Whitehead, Michael Rohdy II, Allison Rohdy, Andrew Rohdy, Elizabeth Rohdy;son-in-law, Bobby Oliver, several nieces and nephews and his faithful companion, Cricket.
In addition to his parents, O.W. was preceded in death by daughter, Mary Frances Oliver, a sister, and three brothers.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, August 5, at 1PM at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Allen Simpson officiating. Burial will be in Piney Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be family members.
The family would like to express their gratitude to all of the staff at River Place Nursing Home for all of their care and kindness expressed to our loved one.
Visitation will be from 12PM-12:50PM on Saturday, August 5.
