Amory—Nixola Collier Duncan, 99, died on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at her daughter’s home. Born September 18, 1913 in Beaverton, Ala., she was a daughter of the late Robert Leslie and Stella Turman Collier. A graduate of Marion County High School in 1933, she married W.J. “Bill” Duncan on July 23, 1933. He died in 1995. Moving to Amory in the early ‘40’s, she worked for the area garment industry as a seamstress and worked with her husband operating Duncan’s Steam Laundry and Cleaners later known as Nu-Way Cleaners in Amory. In her ‘80’s she worked part time for McDonald’s in Amory. A woman of faith, she was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church in Amory teaching Sunday school and serving with the Ladies’ Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading, Bible study, history, especially genealogy, gardening and she was a lover of pets. Known as a talented quilter, she also collected Fenton and Depression glassware. She enjoyed listening to gospel music and especially Bing Crosby Christmas music. She was a member of the Eastern Star.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, December 13, 2012 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Dr. Roy McHenry and Rev. Lloyd Minor. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery in Amory.
Survivors include two daughters, Anne Sturdivant (Earl) of Aberdeen and Barbara “Bobi” Petters (Darrell) of Aberdeen; 9 grandchildren, Bill Barnette, Jim Barnette (Pam), Terri Butler (Dennis), Nicki Wickline (Joe), Cindy Comer (Tommy), Traci Plaxico (Poncho), Nixola Katie Holland Jones, Samantha Holland, and Daniel Petters; 14 great grandchildren; and 11 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; infant brother, R.L. Collier, Jr., daughter, Kawada Jeane Barnette; and granddaughter-in-law, Georgetta Barnette.
Pallbearers will be Bill Burnette, Jim Barnette, Hayes Barnette, Jesse Butler, Jody Comer, Josh Comer, and Lee Plaxico. Honorary pallbearers will be Hayden Plaxico, Collier Jones, Kelby Wickline, Daniel Petters, Chad Burnette, and James Holland, Jr.
Visitation will continue until service time on Thursday at the funeral home.
