Smithville – Elvin Ray Patterson, 80, and Laverne Patterson, 77, died on Wednesday, April 27, 2011, as a result of the Smithville tornado.
Born on October 18, 1930, in the Oak Hill Community, Mr. Patterson was a son of the late Robert Barney and Ovie Brewer Patterson. He attended Oak Hill School and was a graduate of Smithville High School and IJC. He honorably served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. Mr. Patterson worked at the sawmill, at E. R. Patterson Sand, Gravel and Pulpwood, drove a truck for Scribner Equipment Company, retired after 25 years, and later worked for Monroe County. Hard working and always staying busy, he enjoyed working outside. A tender-hearted family man, he cherished time spent with family. Mr. Patterson enjoyed hunting, working word puzzles, loved to sing, and listened to Gospel and Country music. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nelda Fay Patterson and a brother, Bobby Dean Patterson.
Born on July 1, 1933, in Hodges, AL, Mrs. Patterson was a daughter of the late David and Amanda Lovelady Cagle. She attended Smithville High School. Mrs. Patterson was a homemaker and enjoyed babysitting for 35 years. A gentle soul who loved everyone, she was always helping others. Mrs. Patterson loved her grandchildren and enjoyed spoiling her great-grandchildren. She was known for her flower gardens, listening to Gospel music and old hymns, and watching the Gospel Channel on television. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Murray Doyle and a brother, Lawton Cagle.
Married on December 23, 1950, they were members of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. They enjoyed spending time with their dogs.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna Renee (Larry) Seales, Smithville; sister, Linda Kay (Wayne) King, Greenwood Springs; grandchildren, Ryan Douglas (Miranda) Seales, Smithville and Emily Brook (Joel) Washburn, Starkville; great-grandchildren, Kaleigh and Kelby Seales, and Riley, Olivia and Samuel Washburn.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 PM, Monday, May 2, 2011, at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Wes White officiating. Burial will follow in Young Memorial Garden. Pallbearers for Mr. Patterson will be Ryan Seales, Michael and David Johnson, Mason Stevens, Melvin Parker and Pat Patterson. Pallbearers for Mrs. Patterson will be Joel Washburn, Jackie Paine, Craig Cantrell, Ricky Williams, Wade Murray and Ordis Cagle.
Visitation will be at the Funeral Home from 5-8 PM, Sunday.
