Columbus..Mrs. Mattie Sue McCrory Cantrell passed away on Friday, February 16, 2018 at Gilmore Memorial Hospital in Amory. Born in Tremont, MS, on November 7, 1923, she was a daughter of the late William Escar and Verna Mattox McCrory. She attended Tremont Schools in Tremont, MS. Mattie Sue married Theodore Roosevelt Cantrell on June 8, 1941. Together they had one precious son, William Ray Cantrell. She attended the Columbus Air Force Base Chapel where she was loved by everyone. Mattie Sue was very active in the women’s groups there at her church and prided herself in being one of the oldest in attendance.
Mattie Sue was a loving, compassionate, and caring person. Known to be a strong-willed woman she was most definitely a loving mother, aunt, and friend. She loved to work with her flowers and loved yard work. In fact, she cared for her yard until she was in her 90’s. She was in a bowling league many years ago, played cards with family and friends and loved her poodle, Mitzi. She kept an immaculate home and collected Hummel figurines.
Mattie Sue will be remembered for her devotion to her family through good times as well as bad times. She was the last of her immediate family and was welcomed home by each of them on Friday.
Mattie Sue Cantrell is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Cantrell, her son, William Ray; Sister, Beatrice Nash; and Brothers, William Alfred and Luna Edgar McCrory.
A celebration of life service for Mattie Sue Cantrell will be at 3:00 P.M., Sunday, February 18, 2018 at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory. Dr. Allen Simpson will be officiating. Burial will follow in Hatley Cemetery.
Visitation for Mrs. Cantrell will be from 1:30-2:50 PM, Sunday at the funeral home.
