Mary Elizabeth Arnold Smith, 72, died on Friday, August 24, 2012 at her home. Born October 2, 1939 in Monroe County she was a daughter of the late Greely and Cora Lay Arnold. She married Robert Smith in 1958; he survives. A graduate of Hatley High School she was also a graduate of Vaughn’s Beauty College and was manager of Hall’s Beauty Supply in Tupelo for many years. A woman of faith, she was a member of the Tranquil United Methodist Church and was former youth director at the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church in Union City, Tenn. A hard worker, she was a member of the 4-H Club, was former Monroe County Beauty Queen and was original co-owner of the Lantern Loft Steakhouse and the Village Smiths Gift Shop. Before her retirement, she was manager of McRae’s Fine Jewelry in Columbus, assistant manager of McRae’s Fine Jewelry in Tupelo, and was regional sales manager for Eddy Parker giftware. She was a lifetime member of the Tennessee Congress of Parents and Teachers, Inc. Her hobbies included spending time with her family especially her grandchildren, gardening, and fishing.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 26, 2012 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Rev. Harrison Upshaw and Rev. Tim Sisk officiating. Burial will be in the Tranquil Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Flaherty, Thomas Griffith, Ted Gordon, David Boyd, Jerry Carter, Mike Pierson, Alan Haney, and Brad Tate. Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Sargent, John Allen, Mac Allen Thomas, Billy McGhee, Ray McGhee, Bubba McGhee, Ed Gilliland, Jimmy Glenn, Malcolm Glenn, Corey Glenn, Todd Glenn, Jimmy Forbus, Mike King, and Ronnie Herndon.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Robert Noel Smith of Wren; two sons, Terry Smith (Kay) of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and Glenn Smith (Amber) of Amory; one brother, Jimmy Arnold (Sarah) of Greenwood Springs; and 4 grandchildren, Logan, Gavin, Cayden, and Colbie Grace.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Janie Lee Newell.

Visitation will continue until service time on Sunday at the funeral home.
