Mary Eleesia Hughes

Amory – Mary Eleesia Hughes, 99, died on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at Golden Living Center. Born on September 22, 1912, in Abbeville, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Ella Odom Hughes.

She was a member of the Smithville Class of 1937. After graduation, she began to work for Amory Garment Company as a floor lady for the inspectors. Mrs. Hughes was a faithful member of First Baptist Church and had received her 50-year pin from the Order of the Eastern Star.

Mary was a very independent and determined lady. At the age of 95, she was still walking 3 miles each day at the walking track, mowing her own yard, and driving herself around town. She loved to travel, fish, take care of her flowers, and watch the Atlanta Braves.

Survivors include her nieces, Betty Lantrip (Jerry) and Marie Demoss, of Amory; nephews, Glen Hughes (Linda), Amory and Joe Hughes, Cason Community; step-daughter, Maxine Hughes Harrison, Oklahoma City, OK; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Hudson Blake, who died in 1958, and Kirby Hughes, who died in 1968; sister, Lillian McCauley; brothers, Joseph “Skinner,” Bo, Creed, Hubert, and Willie Raymond “Scout” Hughes; step-daughter, Nadine Hughes Roberts; and step-son, John Melvin Hughes.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:30 AM, Friday, July 27 at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Dr. Allen Simpson and Bro. Jimmy McFatter officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jerry Lantrip, Mark Lantrip, Glen Hughes, Joe Hughes, Ray Warren, and Johnny Frank Turman.

Visitation will be from 5 - 8 PM, Thursday at the funeral home.
