Houlka — Mary Alice McCullough Harris-Robison, 96, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at Pontotoc Health and Rehab Nursing Home. Born on March 5, 1922, in Pontotoc County, Mississippi, she was a daughter of Mary Edith and John Thomas McCullough.
Mary graduated from Houlka High School with the Class of 1941 and then attended business school in Meridian. During her career, she worked as a bookkeeper at Van East Pharmacy, as a teller at the Bank of Houlka, and as a manager of Owen’s Department Store in Amory. Her friends at work included Dot and Van East and Van Grisham. Mary’s closest friends were her sisters. She also had a special place in her heart for her friend, Jeanie Collums. She loved her family and friends dearly, and has touched the lives of all of them.
Mary was a Christian woman of faith and an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church. She was passionate about the Pilot Club and was a member of the garden and homemaker’s club as well. A beautiful and loving grandmother, she enjoyed spending much of her time with grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Mary was a meticulous housekeeper as well as garden keeper, where she enjoyed growing beautiful flowers in her yard. In her free time, Mary loved gardening and cooking for her family. She also enjoyed playing cards and listening to Gospel music. Mary is now rejoicing in Heaven, and though she will be missed, she has left behind a lifetime of memories for her loved ones to cherish for the years to come.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Rosemary Gillentine, Amory; grandchildren, Charles Gillentine, Carla Deegan, Casey Driscoll; sisters, Pat Lusty, Ann Ellis, Charlotte McQuary; great-grandchildren, Zaine Sharpnack, Tabitha Gillentine, Shelby Gillentine, Corbin Adriano, Jaden Driscoll, Mary Edith Deegan, Charles Deegan, and Margaret Deegan.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Shelby Harris; sister, Peggy Jade; and brothers, Bill, Dude, and Derwood McCullough.
Her funeral service will be held at 11:30 A.M. Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Shiloh Baptist Church, Houlka. Burial will follow in Halsell Cemetery.
Her family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 A.M. until the service hour. Pallbearers will be Cullen Dendy, Charles Gillentine, Steve Lusty, Andy Freeman, Harold Dendy, and Kim Jade.
