Mary “Adelene” Culver

Amory/Nettleton – Mary Adelene Smith Culver, 92, began her new life in Heaven on Thursday, November 10, 2022. She was born on June 21, 1930, in Nettleton, MS to the late Earnest and Nola Estes Smith.

Adelene grew up in a large family with five other siblings in Monroe County and she attended school in Nettleton. A woman with a great work ethic, she went to work at an early age in order to help support her family. Adelene worked over 30 years in the Garment Industry and 15 years in Furniture Industry. Adelene then finished up her long career providing child care and cleaning other’s homes. She learned early the importance of a strong close family and she made sure her children were provided for in all times.

She married the love of her life, George “Babe” Culver and together they were blessed by God with two daughters. And many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When she was able, she always loved cooking great meals for them and going on memorable vacations together. A fun adventuresome spirit, there was never a time Adelene didn’t want to go anywhere, she was always ready to go as soon as you asked her. Adelene believed in loving all people and her faith and family were of the upmost importance in her life. When she wasn’t spending time with her family, she was with her church family.

She was passionate about her family going to church, being saved, and having a strong relationship with the Lord. Adelene believed in worshipping God with everyone and she attended many churches during her long lifetime, including Amory First Assembly, Freewill Baptist, and Apostolic Truth Tabernacle. Adelene loved Gospel music, especially old time hymns. Daily she lived for the Lord and studied his word, tirelessly spreading the good news to anyone who would listen. She believed in the genuine goodness of her fellow mankind and Adelene would often guide others by saying “If you will be nice to people, they will be nice to you!”

In her down time, she loved to sew just about anything, play card games like “Rook”, and going shopping. One who appreciated the outdoors God had created, Adelene loved to escape to the Mountains for vacations. She knew that every day was precious so she never wasted an opportunity to fellowship with others. And if it was raining, sleeting, snowing or beautiful outside, it didn’t matter, she was going to get her hair done! A precious little lady indeed.

There’s no doubt that Adelene is worshipping at the feet of her Lord, soaking in the Glory that is surrounding her. Her family and friends are thankful for the witness she was for them, her passion for their salvation, for the great memories and the legacy she left behind. Adelene will be missed dearly.

She is survived by her two daughters, Brenda Randolph (Roy), Amory, and Patricia Ann Gilreath (Tommy); grandchildren, Ken Randolph (Lora), Mandie Carruth (Matt), Josh Gilreath (Ashlea), Adam Gilreath (Ashle), and Natalie Gilreath; great-grandchildren, Jake Randolph (Stephanie), Zack Randolph (Hannah), Jet Gilreath, Eva Gilreath, Jason Carruth, Brandy Carruth, Zayne Carruth, Elias Craig; great-great-grandchildren, Cam Randolph, Cruze Randolph, and Reece Randolph; sisters, Carolyn Shackelford (Lawrence), Nettleton, and Flora Birmingham, Lucedale, MS; brother, Marlin “Butch” Smith, Nettleton, MS; and a very special friend, Lucille Braxton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, George “Babe” Culver; brother, Dalton Smith; and her sister, Quana Smith.
