Amory – Mary Jane Pruett Baker, 81, passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, at Sanctuary Hospice House, Tupelo. Born on August 2, 1934, in Memphis, she was a daughter of the late Wiley Phillmore and Mary Mincey Pruett.
Growing up in Memphis, Mary was a graduate of Messick High School, Class of 1953. Meeting her future husband, David L. Baker, while he was in Memphis working on the railroad, they were married on July 10, 1953. Moving to Amory, Mary worked in the area garment industry and later in production with Kramco. She was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church. In the early 1970’s, Mary took over operations of Baker’s Bait Shop. A friendly and happy lady, she is remembered for speaking candidly. One who enjoyed life, Mary loved to go to dinner and dancing with her husband and friends on Saturdays. Having a strong love and close bond with her family, taking care of her children and grandchildren were important to her. She made it a priority to talk with her family every day. Blessed with wonderful neighbors, Mary cherished them like family. She enjoyed traveling, especially with her husband. Possessing a sweet spirit, she loved to sing and enjoyed Country and Gospel music. She will be dearly missed.
Survivors include her daughters, Debra Burks (Terry), Amory, and Delores Baker Rhynerson (Kyle), Austin, TX; son, David L. Baker, Jr., Amory; sister, Vivian Lindsay (Donald), Atlanta, GA; brother, Paul Pruett, Millington; grandchildren, Victoria Burks; Emily, Audrey and Oliver Rhynerson; Dylan Baker, US Navy, and Harley Baker; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Dorothy, Ona Mae, Margaret, and Joyce.
Her Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, January 23, 2016, at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home, Amory, with Rev. Brian Gordon officiating. Burial will be in Haughton Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Oliver Rhynerson, Skip Miles, Lee Miller, Bill Journey, John Hughes, and Johnnie Burch. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Brewer and Glen Poe.
Visitation will be from 9 – 10:45 AM, Saturday, at the funeral home.
