Athens – Martha Carol Sykes West, 68, passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2016, at Shelby Baptist Medical Center, Alabaster, AL. Born April 4, 1948, in Aberdeen, she was a daughter of the late Grover and Grace Ophelia Tubb Sykes.
Martha Carol was a graduate of Aberdeen High School, Class of 1967. On December 22, 1967, she married the love of her life, Roy Elliott West, and they were blessed with a daughter. Martha Carol worked as a seamstress with Amory Garment before becoming disabled. A Christian lady, she attended Paine Memorial United Methodist Church in Athens.
Loving, caring and always giving, Martha Carol loved to spoil her grandchildren. Very energetic, she was very thoughtful and always doing for others. Even as a transplant recipient, Martha Carol was a strong and determined lady who lived life to the fullest. She enjoyed working in the yard, gardening with her husband, cleaning the house, and listening to Country music. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Carol West Denson (Ted), Vandiver, AL; grandchildren, Reagan Colvin and Weston Colvin, Vandiver; step-grandchildren, Brooke Denson and Brayden Denson; sisters, Shirley Brown and June Faulkner, Amory; Cathy Runnels (Rodger), Athens; Peggy Jackson (Steve), Richland, MS; sister-in-law, Mary Lou West, Athens; brothers, Larry Sykes (Mary Nett), Clinton Sykes (Maxine) and Howard Sykes, Athens; Johnny Brewer (Gail), Steens; brother-in-law, Bro. Mac Phillips, Amory; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Billy Wayne and Peggy Head.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 2009.
Her Funeral Service will be at 11 AM, Thursday, October 27, 2016, at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home, Amory, with Bro. Mac Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Durrett Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Deer Sheely, Dwayne Brown, Tommy Head, Danny Williams, Lynn Crump, Ronnie Crump, and Tim Mitchell. Honorary pallbearers will be Ted Denson and Billy Wayne Head.
Her family extends a special thank you to Dr. Joseph Bailey for his great care and to Cahaba Valley Dialysis Center, Pelham, AL.
Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Wednesday, October 26 at the funeral home.
