Amory – Martha G. “Jean” Sanders, age 81 of Amory passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2014, at The Meadows. Born on August 14, 1933, in Sunflower, she was a daughter of the late James and Josephine Suggs Towery.
Jean was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She graduated from Wren High School where she played varsity basketball. Jean married Jerry T. Sanders on May 7, 1955. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Amory. Jean loved volunteering to work with babies and the elderly. Most recently, she volunteered with First Friends Senior Respite Center at First Baptist Church, Amory. Jean enjoyed sewing, working outside in her flowers and gardening.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry Thomas Sanders, Sr., Amory; brother, Wayne Towery (Gaynell), Wren; sister, Betty Colbert (Gene), Vardaman; daughter, Suzette Free (John), Knoxville, TN; son, Tom Sanders (Evelyn), Brentwood, TN; 4 grandchildren, Richard Farmer, Kristi Peek (Justin), Evan Sanders and Kelsey Sommers (Zane); 2 great-grandchildren, Reed and Ryleigh Peek; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Jerry and Betty Lantrip, and Mike and Cathy Ford.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, James Harold Towery, and sisters, Margaret Griffin, Sue Smith and Shirley Matthews.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, November 29 at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Dr. Allen Simpson and Bro. Jimmy McFatter officiating. Burial will follow in Masonic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ricky Mobley, Jerry Griffin, Tim Roberts, Terry Roberts, John Dale Renfro and Kent Summerford. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Lantrip and Mike Ford.
Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Friday at the funeral home.
