Amory – Martha Evelyn Elliott Johnson, 93, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at Sanctuary Hospice House, Tupelo. Born on November 27, 1921, in Nettleton, she was a daughter of the late Zula Mable Kirkpatrick Elliott and Leyzunda Murrah Elliott, Jr.
Mrs. Johnson was a graduate of Smithville High School, Class of 1939. On June 8, 1940, she married Charles W. Johnson. Having worked at Sherman’s, Mrs. Johnson retired as a sales associate from Cutcliff Drug Store. She was a member of Smithville Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and served in numerous other capacities for many decades. Mrs. Johnson loved the Lord and loved serving in His church. A proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she spent years researching genealogy and hundreds of documents to show she had at least 5 ancestors who fought in the American Revolutionary War. Mrs. Johnson was an active member of Smithville Homemakers Club for many years, serving as Secretary/Treasurer, Vice-President, and ultimately President. She tirelessly scrapbooked her Homemakers Club projects, her decades of genealogy research, as well as events in the lives of her family. Patient and determined, she enjoyed researching family heritage, genealogy, DAR research, and the Homemakers Club.
Survivors include her brother, Victor Elliott, Sr., (Kay), Amory; sister-in-law, Sammie Elliott, Amory; grandchildren, Pamela Johnson Miller and Charles Jerry “Chuck” Johnson, Jr., of Saltillo; great-grandchildren, Leslie and Sidney; many nieces & nephews whom she loved dearly.
In addition to her parents and beloved husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Hubert and Ruble Elliott; and cherished son, Jerry.
A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 PM, Saturday, February 28 at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home, Amory with Bro. Wes White officiating. Burial will follow in Pearce Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Dabbs, Victor Elliot, Jr., Skipper Moon, and Lee Elliot.
Visitation will be from 12:30 PM until the service hour Saturday at the funeral home.
