Born on March 12, 1925, in Monroe County, she was a daughter of the late L. A. and Frances Elizabeth Lay West.Mrs. Pointer was a graduate of Greenwood Springs High School and Birmingham Beautician School. Licensed in Alabama, Florida, California, and Mississippi, she was a self-employed beautician who had a great rapport with all of her customers. A faithful member of Athens Baptist Church, she served as the Children’s Sunday school teacher, the church pianist, and sang in the choir. Blessed with an abundance of friends, Mrs. Pointer cherished spending time with her family, church family, and friends. A sweet lady who never met a stranger, she enjoyed talking on the phone, listening to preaching and Gospel music on the radio, painting, crocheting, needlework, piano, gardening, and working in her flowers.She is survived by her son, Andrew S. “Sonny” Allen, Jr., (Dana), Aberdeen; sisters, Catherine Funderburk and Dorothy Crump, Aberdeen; grandchildren, Sheryl Allen Carter (Troy), Andy S. Allen, III, (Michelle), and Aaron S. Allen (Saska); great-grandchildren, Kayla Carter, Caroline Carter, Cameron Allen, Michael Allen, Andrea Allen, Amy Allen Raby (Jeremy), and Jeremy Allen; nieces and nephews, J. W. Boyd, Martha Cole, Ann York (Charles), W. B. West, Jr., (Martha), James West, Jerry West (Brenda), Bobby West, Mary Lou West, Betty Jane Phillips (Rev. Mac), Donald Boyd (Brenda), Len Crump, Donna Pate, Ronnie Crump (Tracy), and Lee Crump.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Pointer; brothers and sisters, Albert, W. B., and Roy West, and Virgie and Mildred Boyd; and nephews, Danny Funderburk, Roy and Louis West, and David and Eddie Boyd.A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 AM, Thursday, November 10 at Athens Baptist Church with Bro. Stephen Ford, Rev. David Harrell, Rev. Tom Sheffield, Bro. Roy McHenry, Bro. Julian Thompson, and Bro. Mac Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Durrett Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Johnny Moon, Wiley Morgan, W. B. West, Jr., Donald Boyd, Wes Pate, and Jerry West. Honorary pallbearers will be J. W. Boyd, Lee Crump, Ronnie Crump, and Len Crump.Visitation will be from 3 – 7 PM, Wednesday at the funeral home.
