Smithville – Marie Melvina Cole Kendrick, 85, died on Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at Oak Tree Plantation. Born on April 1, 1926, in the Turon Community of Itawamba County, she was a daughter of the late Johnnie Columbus “Lum” and Etna Drucilla Stafford Cole.
Mrs. Kendrick was a graduate of Smithville High School and received her Elementary Education degree from Mississippi State University. For forty-two years, she taught school at Smithville and for a brief period of time at Hatley. Mrs. Kendrick was a member of Pearce Chapel Free Will Baptist Church and had served as a Sunday school teacher. A very loving and caring lady, she enjoyed helping others when they were sick by cooking food and taking it to them. Enjoying the outdoors, Mrs. Kendrick liked to work in her flower beds, the garden, and mowing her yard. An excellent seamstress, she enjoyed crocheting. Gospel music was her favorite.
She is survived by a brother, Charlie Wilber Cole (Ramona), Amory; nieces and nephews, Angie Meaders, Tina Ginn, Bill Cole, Bob Cole, and Johnny Cole; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and a host of friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Robert Hershel Kendrick, and a brother, James Melton Cole.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 AM, Friday, July 8 at Pearce Chapel Free Will Baptist Church with Bro. Van Dale Hudson officiating. Burial will follow in Pearce Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Quinn Cole, John Michael Cole, Bob Cole, Matthew Cole, Johnny Cole, Mark Ginn, and Butch Palmer.
Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until the service hour on Friday at the church.
