Margarita C. “Rita” Thompson

Smithville/Amory – Rita Thompson, 74, was reunited with her husband and began living her new life on Saturday, September 3, 2022. Rita was born on January 16, 1948, in Amory to the late Dorothy “Dot” Brown Cauthern.

Rita grew up in Monroe County and was a proud Seminole, graduating from Smithville High School with the class of 1966. She furthered her education at Blue Mountain College where she received a Bachelor’s of Arts in Home Economics.
She mastered her career, over the years working in the home, excelling in the support and nurturing of her precious family.

When she was young, a carefully crafted airplane was flown across the room in her direction. Upon her catching it, and opening it, she read the sender’s message inscribed on it. Roy Thompson had asked her for a date the most original was he could, via airplane, and it worked. Later, she married him and he was her best friend in life. They were blessed with many great years together and she missed him dearly when he went on before her. Rita was sweet, loving, a great mother and one of a kind “Meme”. The glue of her family, Rita was wise, had patience, and always gave great advice. Rita loved her family and cherished her granddaughters and great grandchild. Her extended family was the children of the neighborhood. She was mother to many and she gave warmth, encouragement, and many smiles through the years.

She believed in the Lord and was Baptist. Rita liked helping others when she was able, and at one time she was a Cub Scout Leader. Children naturally were drawn to her as she had welcoming presence. She was artistic and creative and liked to listen to Elton John, Elvis and Kenny Rogers. Rita was a great painter, flower gardener, and she enjoyed getting lost in a good book. Some of her passions were spreading Breast Cancer Awareness as well as supporting the local Human Society. Some of closest friends were Billy Farrar, Morgan Coombs, and Darnell Collums. Together, they made lots of great memories and they also solved many of the worlds’ problems.

Rita, aka “Meme”, will be missed so much by all her family and friends. There are no words for all that she meant to them. They will cherish all the wonderful memories made through the years and she will remain forever in their hearts.

She is survived by her daughter, Katie Thompson Rost, Amory; son, Sean P. Thompson (Jodie), Tupelo; granddaughters, Molly and Morgan Rost; Laura and Reagan Thompson; great-granddaughter, Rylee Kate Yarbrough; close friends, Billy Farrar, Morgan Coombs, and Darnell Collums.

In addition to her mother, Dorothy Cauthern, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Roy G. Thompson.
