Margarette Ophelia Minga Norton Thomas, 85, passed away on June 9, 2019, at home with her children and grandchildren by her side. She was born on February 12, 1934, and was the daughter of the late James Ellis Minga and Maggie Cora Odom Minga.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Amory, MS. She worked for the telephone company and as a bank teller. She enjoyed the simple things in life. She was an avid gardener, loved to cook and most of all spending time with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, T.J. Norton; her second husband, Pierce Thomas; her grandson, Daniel Norton; 5 brothers and 3 sisters.
Margarette is survived by her children: Keith Norton (Brenda), Smithville; Greg Norton (Sheila), Greenwood Springs; Patti Swan (Tony), Amory; and Pamela Cook (John), Germantown, TN; 4 granddaughters: Kristi Carter (Jonathan), Okolona; Kayla Hathcock (Josh), Greenwood Springs; Leah and Andrea Crosby, Amory; 5 great-grandchildren: Ian and Cora Carter, Grayson Fears, Mary-Morgan Pierce, and Ava Norton; 4 step grandchildren; 11 step great-grandchildren; 4 step great-great grandchildren; sister: Ruth Whitehead, Smithville; sisters-in-law: Mary Lois Minga and Sue Minga.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Thomas will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at the First Baptist Church in Amory with Dr. Allen Simpson and Bro. Jimmy McFatter officiating. Pallbearers will be Donald Smith, Joe Minga, David Minga, Dean Minga, Ronald Minga, Roland Minga, Russell Minga, Randy Minga, Alan Minga, Mark Whitehead, and Gilbert Whitehead. Honorary pallbearers will be Ian Carter, Grayson Fears, and the Lady’s Sunday school class at First Baptist.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 540, Amory, MS 38821.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at E. E. Pickle Funeral home in Amory.
She will also lie in state at the church on Thursday from 12:00 pm until the service hour at 1 pm.
