Smithville—Lydia Tucker Word, 89, died on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. Born on March 29, 1923 in Prentiss County, she was a daughter of the late Lafayette Miller and Janie Margaret Fraser. Moving to Monroe County at an early age, she attended Hamilton High School and she was a graduate of Wood Junior College. She married James Derrick “Jim” Word in 1942; he died in 2006. She was a long time employee of the Amory branch of the Mississippi Department of Health retiring after 20 years. A member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, she enjoyed listening to gospel music. Her hobbies include visiting family in Texas and spending time with her grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, November 23, 2012 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Rev. Charles Coggins officiating. Burial will be in the Oddfellows Rest Cemetery in Aberdeen. Pallbearers will be Roy Miller Tucker, Donald Tucker, James Tucker, Scott Tucker, Wayne Tucker, Tommy Dahlem, Robbin Young, Adolpho Quan.
Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Gilliam (Don) of Elizabethton, Tenn., two sons, James L. Word (Lynn) of Lubbock, Tex. and Gerald Word (Debbie) of Smithville; one brother, Robert Tucker (Shirley) of Hamilton, Miss.; one sister-in-law, Louise May (E.C.) of Bay Town, Tex.; 6 grandchildren, Steve Gilliam, Anissa Gerber, Haley Word, Taylor Word, Allison Word, and Jon Derrick Word; one great grandchild, Chloe Gerber.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, James and Roy Tucker.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time on Friday at the funeral home.
