Lonzie Phelps

Amory— Lonzie Carson Phelps, 57, was called to his heavenly home on Sunday, March 10, 2019. Born in Andalusia, AL on January 1, 1962, he was a son of William Carson and Thelma Ryals Phelps.

Lonzie was a graduate of Andulusia High School of Andulusia, Alabama, Class of 1983. He was a faithful member of Victory Baptist in Nettleton and was delighted in attending services and making joyful noise with the congregation. Lonzie was a sweet spirit who loved Jesus and his family. He prayed with his family every day, and before bed he always recited the bedtime prayer: “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep…” He enjoyed celebrating birthdays and anniversaries, and found great joy in going for doctor’s visits to see Dr. Laura.

Lonzie had a big heart that engulfed every situation. He adored animals, especially dogs and cats. He relished the outdoors, and enjoyed raking leaves, mowing the grass, and driving the car. He liked to be helpful around the house and would do any chore needed, although he was not fond of vacuuming. His favorite time of year was Christmastime, but he celebrated life every single day.

Lonzie had a very strong bond with his sister, Julia, and spent much of his time with her. He enjoyed doing everything with Julia, especially singing and laughing in the car, and together they created a lifetime of special memories. His sister was his best friend, and he loved his family dearly.

During the annual Amory Railroad Festival, Lonzie always attended the car show to look at all of the old cars. Additionally, he always had a good time listening to the music at the festival. Lonzie was full of life and never met a stranger. Every woman he met was his girlfriend. While his great-nephew was a student and football player at Amory High School, Lonzie never missed a game, and always sat on the field to cheer on the team.

He was truly a one-of-a-kind person with a heart of gold. Lonzie never spoke badly of anyone, and his smile was contagious. Lonzie always saw good in everything. He was tender-hearted, loving, and a gentle soul. He made many meaningful friendships throughout his life and made a mark on the hearts of all who knew him. Lonzie will be dearly missed.
Lonzie is survived by his sister, Julia Jenkins (Bobby), Wren; brothers, Eddie Johnston, Andalusia, AL, Ashley Johnston, Red Level, AL; nieces, Jennifer Bennett, Desiree Bennett; nephew, James Allen Bennett; and several other beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Lonzie was preceded in death by his nephew, Allen Garrett.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2PM on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory. Bro. Robert Earl Fowlkes will lead the service, and Dr. Laura Washington will speak. Honorary pallbearers include the AHS football players, cheerleaders, and dance team members of the 2017 football season. Burial will be beside his mother and daddy at a later date.

Visitation for Lonzie will be on Friday, March 15, 2019, from 5-8PM at the funeral home.

The family would like to give special thanks to the nurses and staff of Halcyon Hospice for their wonderful care of Lonzie.
