Leonard Conn

Nettleton – Leonard Harlton Conn, 95, passed away on June 12, 2024, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Amory and had a sweet reunion in Heaven. He was born on November 10, 1928, in Itawamba County, Mississippi to the late Clabe Morgan Conn and Willie Maude Harmon.

Leonard grew up in Monroe County and graduated from Shannon High School. A Patriot, he proudly served as a Private First Class in the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict. For the rest of his life, he was so proud of his service to the country he loved.

He married the love of his life, Marie Ray on December 12, 1953 and they were blessed by God with 69 years of marriage, three children and a large extended family which he adored. Leonard was a hard worker and would help anyone who was willing to help themselves. At times his quick temper might reveal itself, yet it was just him reacting with a base of wisdom gained through so many years. His career included working for the Mississippi Highway Department as well as for A & B Paint Striping of Tupelo, MS, where he served as the Striping Foreman. He provided a great life for his family and worked many hard hours in harsh weather conditions yet he didn’t mind sacrificing for his family.

A longtime member of Grady’s Chapel Methodist Church, he served as both the treasurer and on the Pastor Parish Committee. He loved the Lord and his church family. Through the years, they worshipped God, served the community, and gave thanks to God for his many blessings.
A member of the Masons, Leonard had many close friends including Mervin Underwood, Wayne Garner, and Nolen Hamilton.

In addition to being with his family, he enjoyed Bluegrass music and spending time at Bam’s with his friends, such as Nolan Hamilton and Mervin Underwood. He and his wife had wonderful flower and vegetable gardens and they enjoyed being outside just working the ground that God gave them.

His faith and great work ethic is the wonderful legacy he passed onto the generations in his family. Leonard will be missed but his loved ones know he is at peace.

He is survived by his daughter, Gail Dorroh (Joel). Bellefontaine, MS; son, Larry Conn (Lori), Wren, MS; 7 grandchildren, Danielle McMillian, Andy Dorroh (Annaka), Jesse Dorroh (Kimberly), Mitch Dorroh (Lauren), Miller Conn, Mason Conn; 11 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren and one on the way; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Ray Conn; daughter, Elizabeth Conn Word; grandson, Patrick Lane Chism; sisters, Marcelle Conn Neal and Louise Conn Price; brothers, Horace Conn, Wayne Conn and J.C. Conn.
