Larry Allen Knight
Greenwood Springs - Larry Knight, 78, met Jesus face to face and was reunited with many of his family and friends on Monday, October 2, 2023. He was born on October 1, 1945, in Monroe County to the late Jerry and Clara Stanford Knight.
From day one, Larry learned the importance of family as he had six brothers and two sisters in his family. He graduated from Smithville High School, a proud Seminole, with the class of 1964. He boasted of being a member of the school’s first football team. Later that year, he married his sweetheart, Rubye Lee on November 20, 1964. Together, they were blessed with over 58 years of marriage, wonderful memories, three caring daughters, and many grandchildren. In 1968, he was drafted into the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War. He was a proud Patriot who always was thinking of others before himself. When he got out of the service, he worked as a farmer and logger before he began a lifetime career at the United States Postal Service as a Rural Mail Carrier. He knew the people in his community so well and through the years he served so many people. He took care of elderly patrons on his route by bringing in firewood, helping with things they needed, and just checking on them each day. He was often repaid in fresh fruits and vegetables or fresh baked goods for his kindness. After retiring from the postal service, Larry owned a trucking company. He enjoyed working on them and treasured his relationships with his drivers and trucking family.
Larry always wanted to be moving, going out and doing whatever; you couldn’t hold him down. He enjoyed the outdoors and farming. Larry worked with animals such as dogs, cows, and horses on the farm and he always tended to their needs. It wasn’t uncommon for Larry to be driving down the road and see a horse or mule that was neglected, purchase it, and bring it to the farm to give it a better home. He was full of life, always had a great attitude, and often got a smile when he would crack a joke or tell a tall tale. He loved people coming to visit him at his home or the barn. He would often cook for those who had gathered and had mastered the smoker and the grill. Larry’s mission in life was to love people the way he felt love from Jesus and he accomplished it. His relationship with Jesus meant the world to him and he was a faithful member of Splunge Baptist Church.
Besides his family and church, some of his close friends were Brett Ballard and Jamie Troller with whom he worked on the farm tending to their mules and horses. One of his favorite hobbies was tapping into his heritage by trying his hand at the old methods of farming such as using a horse with wagons and primitive plows.
He was talented and a one of a kind person who will be dearly missed. His family and friends are forever grateful to God for all the love and joy Larry gave to them. Until we meet again.
