Amory – Joyce Pennington Brown, 89, died on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Oak Tree Plantation, Amory. Born on July 2, 1923, in Amory, she was a daughter of the late Emit R. and Vedda Tubb Pennington.
Mrs. Brown was a graduate of Amory High School, Class of 1941. On January 10, 1942, she married Maither Brown. Mrs. Brown was co-owner of Jo-Mil Pastry Shoppe in Amory from 1968 – 1984, where cake decorating was her specialty. Cherishing her church, she and her husband were charter members of St. Andrews United Methodist Church. A loving and sweet lady who cared for everyone, Mrs. Brown’s favorite things in life were her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and pets, especially her Boston terrier, Katie Bell. A wonderful cook, she enjoyed cooking for her family and friends, particularly during the Holidays. Very competitive when playing cards, Mrs. Brown loved Canasta and was a member of the same Canasta Club for over 50 years. She was an avid Bridge player, competing and winning many tournaments in North Mississippi.
She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn McKenzie (Wayne), Murfreesboro, TN, and Dorinda Miller (Lee), Amory; grandchildren, Warren McKenzie (Jamie) and Melanie McKenzie Webster (Scott); great-grandchildren, Blaine and Callie Joyce McKenzie; and Wilson, Wyatt and Wade Webster; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, John David McKenzie; and brothers, Erie, Clyde, Okla, Candler, Jessie, and Stanley Pennington.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:30 PM, Sunday, January 13 at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Sisk and Rev. Glyn Wiygul officiating. Burial will follow in Masonic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wayne Thompson, Doyle Harris, Skip Miles, Thomas Griffith, Blaine McKenzie, Wyatt Webster, Doug Pennington, and Wade Webster. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Brown, Carol and Jerry Williams, Hal Rogers, Wanda and Larry Rorie, Otis Cowan, and James Burrow.
Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Saturday at the funeral home.
