John Carroll

John passed away on Monday, January 10, 2011, at his home in San Francisco, CA, from a heart related illness. Known to many as Andrew of Touched by an Angel and Amory’s son, John was 47.
Attending elementary school in Amory and junior high in Cleveland, TN, where his first stage role was Sound of Music, John was a graduate of Tupelo (MS) High School where he continued performing in such productions as Sugar, South Pacific and Brigadoon. He attended Mississippi State University, majoring in pre-law and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. While at MSU, John was asked to perform in a one-act play and was chosen Best Actor on the MSU campus.
Changing his plans from law to theatre, John attended the University of Memphis and graduated with a BFA in Theatre Performance. Relocating to Los Angeles, CA, he began his career in film and television.
Fans remember his roles in Billionaire Boys Club, Best of the Best, but primarily as Doc Hock in Tour of Duty and Andrew in Touched By An Angel.
John was honored as the University of Memphis Outstanding Young Alumni in 1999. He emceed the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis, IN, and was active in such charities as Make-A-Wish and Sharon Glaser’s Pediatric Aids Association. John was politically concerned and supportive.
He is survived by his parents; two brothers, James David “Jamey” and wife, Marlene, and children, Jack Christopher, John David and Maya Dye of Chattanooga and Cleveland, TN, and Jerre Duvall Dye of Memphis, TN; his maternal grandmother, Irene “Gagee” Duvall, Tupelo; and a lifelong friend, Karren Baker, San Francisco, CA. John was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Carroll M. Dye of Aberdeen and J. L. “Jack” Duvall of Amory and a brother, Glynn Dye.
Funeral services for John Carroll Dye, son of Jim and Lynn Dye of Amory, MS, will be held Saturday, January 22 at 1 PM in St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, Amory.
Pallbearers will be Thomas Griffith, Ray Jones, Dr. Dick Holman, Sheldon Green, Adam McLaughlin, David Webb and Dr. Jim Rimer. Honorary pallbearers will be Voices of the South cast members and Touched By An Angel cast and crew.
The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the Dye family suggests memorials to Amory Food Pantry, 123 S. Main, Amory, MS 38821, or the Youth Program at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, 1123 Veterans Legion Drive, Amory, MS 38821.
