John P. 'Johnny' Burke Jr.

Amory – John P. ‘Johnny’ Burke, Jr., 93, died on Monday, August 27, 2012, at Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center. Born on June 24, 1919, in Boston, MA, he was a son of the late Mary Vienneau and John Patrick Burke, Sr.

Mr. Burke was a graduate of Brighton, MA, High School where he active in ROTC. Honorably serving his country as a Master Sergeant during World War II in the European Theater, he was in combat with Gen. Patton and received a Purple Heart. On December 2, 1945, he married Rena Lucille Whidbee in Pascagoula, and they lived in Moss Point for 52 years. After forty years of service with Ingalls Shipbuilding, Mr. Burke retired as a safety officer, working in the Fire, Safety, and Medical fields. Moving to Amory in April 2008, he was a member of First Baptist Church. A devoted husband and loving father, Mr. Burke looked forward to spending time with his family and working. Humorous and having a love for people, he enjoyed Motorhoming, having visited all 48 Continental states, camping, and listening to Country and Gospel music.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille W. Burke, Amory and formerly of Columbia and Moss Point; daughters, Janis Switzer (Wayne), Thomasville, AL, and Judy Gilmore (Danny), Columbia; son, Ray Burke (Becky), Amory; sister, Loretta Downey, Eliot, ME; 6 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Mealey, and a brother, Al Burke.

A Celebration of Life Service with Military Honors will be held at 3 PM, Saturday, September 1 at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Dr. Allen Simpson and Bro. Jimmy McFatter officiating. A Committal Service will be held at 2 PM, Sunday, September 2 in Woodlawn Cemetery, Columbia with Bro. Darrel Daniels officiating. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:50 PM.

Visitation will be from 1 – 2:45 PM, Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to First Baptist Church, Hand Bell Fund, PO Box 540, Amory, MS 38821.
