Amory – Earnest Joel “Joe” Hood, 87, died on Wednesday, February 2, 2011, at Golden Living Center, Amory. Born on May 31, 1923, in Bigbee, he was a son of the late Paul Franklin and Betty Pearl Hood Hood.
Mr. Hood attended Amory High School. He had worked for Amory Steam Laundry, was a presser with Amory Garment and retired as a machine operator from Walker Manufacturing. An active member of Meadowood Baptist Church, Mr. Hood served as an usher and sang in the choir. He enjoyed visiting with friends over a cup of coffee, woodworking, antiques, going to flea markets, collecting Moon and Star glass, listening to the Gaithers, watching Channel 39 and taking vacations.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lucy Burks Nabors Hood, Amory; daughter, Emily (Bubba) Morris, Cleveland; son, Andy Joel “Barbara” Hood, Amory; grandchildren, Jennifer ( Bobby) Tickner, Krista (Paul) Andy, Miranda (Shane) Gray, and Matthew (Brandi) Hood; great-grandchildren, Robert, Adron, George, Coleman, Shane, Isaac, Allison, Haley, Stormie, and Robbie; several nieces and nephews and many special friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Alma Beachum and brothers, Daniel, Ray, Elmer and Errol Hood.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 AM, Friday at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home, Amory with Bro. Lloyd Sweatt officiating. Burial will be in Haughton Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Frank Owen, Pete Miller, Richard Wood, Winslow Cox, Van Ritter, Steve Rieves, Van Burrows and Mickey Miller.
Visitation will continue until the service hour on Friday.
Memorials may be given to Meadowood Baptist Church Senior Citizens, 1510 Hatley Road, Amory, MS 38821.
