Jimmy Mathis
Smithville- Jimmy Mathis, 83, left his earthly body and began his new life in Heaven on March 10, 2022. He was born in Collins, MS, on February 05, 1939, a son of the late Eugene Mathis and Hazel M. Lott Mathis.
Jimmy grew up in Covington County, MS and graduated from Collins High school. Having been led by God to share the Gospel with the world, he furthered his education and went to Jones County Community College. Later, he earned his Bachelor’s in Science in Theology at William Carey College, and eventually earned his Master’s Degree in Theology and Religion at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. After getting his education, he married the love of his life, Marion Belle Meredith in 1965, and together they were blessed with two children.
Jimmy served the Lord and loved God’s people and enjoy leading Churches across the southeast as a Pastor and Youth Minister. He was an Assistant Pastor in Brownsville, TX, as a Youth Minister in Mobile, AL and a Pastor at Pellston Baptist Church in Michigan. Through the years he and his family traveled all over the United States doing missions for God. About 20 years ago, he moved to Monroe County to be close to his family.
Jimmy loved to witness to his friends, neighbors, and strangers about all things related to God. At times, he would also chime in to talk politics. He never met a stranger and had the welcoming personality that he could talk to anyone he crossed paths with. Jimmy found comfort and enjoyment spending time with his family, which was the most important thing on this earth to him. He was very passionate about donating to charities and helping people in every way that he could. Jimmy enjoyed singing traditional Hymnals and listening to the Gaither’s Quartet. Of all his accomplishments, Jimmy was most proud of graduating from seminary school and his ability to share the Gospel to the people that he met and loved in this world.
He will be missed dearly but there is great confidence that he is rejoicing with the angels. His family and friends have no doubt that he heard “Well done, my good and faithful servant”.
