Jimmie Quay Conwill
Jimmie Quay Conwill of Amory, Mississippi, passed away in the North Mississippi Medical Center Gilmore on January 18, 2024 at the age of 90, surrounded by her family who loved her deeply.
Jimmie was born in the Carolina Community in Itawamba County, MS on May 10, 1933. She was the fourth child of Presley Bailey and Dora Belle Elliott Conwill.
She spent her childhood and youth growing up in the Carolina Community and attended Itawamba Agricultural High School. She began her college education at Itawamba Junior College (now ICC) and received a B.S. degree from Mississippi State College for Women, now known as Mississippi University for Women. She also earned a Certified Professional Secretary Certificate. She spent most of her adult life in Florence, AL where she taught Business Education for over 30 years at Northwest State Community College.
After retirement, she moved to Amory to be closer to her siblings, Mable, Nelda, and Wayne.
Jimmie, a lifelong Methodist, was an active member of St. Andrews Methodist Church in Amory, MS, and was also very involved in church activities at her home church, Carolina Methodist Church in Itawamba County.
She was preceded in death by her parents and all 5 of her siblings: Mable Hood (Melvin Dean) of Amory, MS, Lawrence Conwill (Doris) of Florence, AL, Wayne Conwill (Mavis) of Nettleton, MS, Hazel McDonald (Robert) of Byron, GA, and Nelda Hicks Justice (Richard) of Amory, MS. As the last remaining member of her original family unit, she graciously and effortlessly assumed the role of mother to her nieces and nephews who will be forever grateful.
Although she never had children of her own, her family legacy is rich with those who were blessed to have her in their lives and influenced by the example she set every single day. Her career was important to her, but her real passion was the family she loved and nurtured and treasured without measure. She was a true blessing.
She is survived by eight nieces and nephews that she considered to be her children: Kennon Hood (Kathy) of Summerville, SC, Larry Conwill (Leigh) of Huntsville, AL, Lynn Conwill Hogan (Paul) of Hartselle, AL, Bob McDonald (Yuliia) of Folly Beach, SC, Sandra McDonald Dempsey (Fred) of Lake Charles, LA, Dixie Conwill Alim (Naveed) of Amory, MS, Angie Conwill Whitenton of Amory, MS, and Dee Dee Hicks Larson (Erick) of Starkville, MS.
In addition, she had 26 great nieces and nephews: Ashley Schermerhorn, Erynne Messina, Melissa Hood, Joey Hood, Brian Brister, Artem Kolesnyk, Joseph Dempsey, Catherine Dempsey; Will Dempsey, Clare Huang, Brigid Findley, Michael Dempsey, Emily Dempsey, Freddy Dempsey, Max Dempsey, Mary Dempsey, Josh Conwill, Clay Conwill, Kristin Conwill, Jenn Hogan, Alli Maples, Chris Alim, Cam Alim, Joe Whitenton, Drake Larson, and Johannah Larson.
She had nine great-great nieces and nephews: Lily Conwill, Dean Conwill, Graeye Messina, Wilkes Messina, Adam Alim, James Findley, Ian Dempsey, Hannah Dempsey, Nora Dempsey.
Her family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the compassionate care provided by Abby Isaac, Sandra Pritchard, Kim Phillips, Nancy Tubb, and Joyce Sanders. She loved them like family.
Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, January 21, 2024, from 1:00-2:00 at Pickle Funeral home in Amory, MS, with the funeral service immediately following. There will be a graveside service following the funeral at Carolina Cemetery in the Carolina Community in Itawamba County, MS.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Alim, Cammeron Alim, Joseph Whitenton, Drake Larson, Erick Larson, Naveed Alim, Paul Hogan, and Fred Dempsey.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Carolina Methodist Church or St. Andrews Methodist Church in Amory, MS.
