Jewel “Jean” Cantrell
Amory – Jean Cantrell, 85, began her new life in Heaven on January 22, 2023. She was born in Becker, MS, on August 25, 1937 to the late Ollie Scott and Rebecca Myatt Scott.
Jean grew up in Monroe County with four other siblings, and her best friend was her twin sister, Joan Stanford. They were known to get into harmless mischief. Oftentimes, they would get their thumbs purple from shelling peas, and they liked to sing hymns on the porch of their family home. Family meant the world to her, In the Scott family, Jean was the last living of the five siblings. Her sister Joan passed in 2013, and prior that Evelyn, Willis, and Hugh “Boots” passed. She also lost her beloved niece, Janet Mosely, a woman whom she considered her own daughter.
Growing up, her faith supported her in hard times. She loved the Lord and was an active member at Meadowood Baptist Church for over 60 years. Her church family at Meadowood was only second to that of her only son, Joseph Scott, known affectionately as Joey. He and his wife LeAnne, and her grandsons Cole William and Jackson Elliott loved traveling from Louisiana to “Grandma’s house.” She always spoiled them by making her delicious tea cakes and her world famous coleslaw. Jean was a devoted mother and grandmother, a loving aunt, and faithful friend to many. She always believed that honesty was the best policy.
Jean was a successful businesswoman for many years. She founded and operated Cantrell Real Estate, and at one point was name Monroe Country Businesswoman of the Year. Jean worked as both a broker and an agent, and she took joy in finding homes for hundreds of families over the years. With a wink, she called herself “Mean Jean the Real Estate Machine,” but her kindness was all that she was remembered for.
In her free time, she absolutely loved flowers, whether bright red clusters hanging from baskets outside her door or the pink and orange Impatiens she carefully planted each year near the shady Hosta plants. Every fall, she could be found gathering pecans from her backyard tree or trimming summer’s Hydrangea blossoms to share with a friend.
In all seasons of life, she took time to cherish what God had made and given her. Others always felt that sense of gratitude, and it warmed their hearts as well. There is no doubt that she is at peace and with her Heavenly father. Her family and friends will miss her dearly.
She is survived by her son, Joseph “Joey” Scott Cantrell (LeAnne), Mandeville, LA; grandsons, Jackson Elliott Cantrell and Cole William Cantrell; nieces and nephews, Doug and Rebecca Stanford; Glen and Lisa Rhudy; and Mark and Amy Stanford.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Joan Stanford and Evelyn Martin; brothers, Hugh Scott and Willis Scott.
