Pontotoc – Jewel M. Burks, 95, died on Monday, October 31, 2011, at Graceland Care Center. Born on March 21, 1916, in Lamar County, AL, she was the daughter of the late Clayton and Mary Frances Johnson Noe.
Mrs. Burks grew up in the Pine Springs, AL, community and attended Pine Springs School. She married Robert Lee Burks on October 10, 1936. A woman of faith, Mrs. Burks was a member of By Faith Baptist Church and a former member of East Amory Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking for and attending church fellowships. Before becoming a homemaker, Mrs. Burks was a seamstress with Pullman Couch. A tenacious lady, she overcame many obstacles in life. Mrs. Burks enjoyed Gospel music, sewing, crocheting, and reading. Living in Pontotoc since 1996, she preferred to stay close to home, and she cherished the time spent with her family.
She is survived by her daughters, Joyce L. Stubstad (William J.), Milton, FL, and Louise Todd (Jim), Pontotoc; grandchildren, Valerie Pound, Christopher Payne, Tracy Jenkins, Randy Stubstad, Brent Stubstad, Bryson Hood, Denny Hood, Brenda Todd, and Lisa Todd; great-grandchildren, Randi Leigh Pound, Kody Pound, Kendall Jenkins, Ben Jenkins, Nick Jenkins, Abigail Stubstad, Caryn Hood, and Beth Hood; sisters-in-law, Lucy Hood, Amory and Erah Clark, Sulligent; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Hood; great-granddaughter, Catherine Grace Hood; three sisters; and three brothers.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 PM, Wednesday, November 16 at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Marcus Coward and Bro. James Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Haughton Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be William Stubstad, Jim Todd, Christopher Payne, Bryson Hood, Denny Hood, and Kody Pound.
Visitation will be from 5 – 7 PM, Tuesday at the funeral home.
