Sulligent –Jessie Sherrill Thompson, 92, died on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, at The Windsor Place, Columbus. Born on July 2, 1918, in Ethel, Attala County, MS, he was a son of the late Thomas Benjamin and Bettie Stepp Thompson.
Always upbeat and a giving person, Mr. Thompson loved to laugh. He operated Thompson Barber Shop in Vinegar Bend, Amory until retiring in 1971. He was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church, Sulligent. Known as a character, Mr. Thompson loved people and storytelling. He was a Mason and a Shriner. Mr. Thompson was an avid fisherman, loved working in his shop making knives and walking sticks, and enjoyed gardening.
He is survived by his daughters, Cheryl Thompson (Fred) Owen, Birmingham and Charlotte Thompson (Gene) Lanier, Columbus; step-daughter, Mattie Lou (Jerry) Eastman, Sulligent; step-son, Bob (Ann) Birmingham, Tupelo; grandchildren, Amy Lanier Perkins, Jennifer Owen Larrabee and Stuart Lanier; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Johnnie Cantrell Thompson and Robbie Birmingham Thompson, a sister, Catherine T. Rhodes and brothers, Charles Ephron, Arthur, Ellis, T. B. and Randol Thompson.
A Funeral Service will be held at 1 PM, Friday at First Free Will Baptist Church, Sulligent with Bro. Edward Puckett officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery, Amory.
Visitation will be from 11 AM until the service hour at the church on Friday.
