Smithville – Jesse “Grandy” Collins Cox, 85, died on Wednesday, April 27, 2011, as a result of the Smithville tornado. Born on January 15, 1926, in Smithville, he was a son of the late Lucille Collins and Moman Terrell Cox, Sr.
Before his class graduation, Mr. Cox left for World War II. He honorably served in the US Army during this war and during the Korean War. He married Nell Thompson on September 30, 1966. Self-employed most of his life, Mr. Cox was the owner, President, and Harbor Master of Smithville Marina, Inc. and co-owned Cox Rentals, LLC. He attended First United Methodist Church and the Joel Davis Sunday school class. A strongly determined man with a great outlook on life, Mr. Cox enjoyed being outside working his farm and at the marina. His grandchildren were his pride-and-joy and he loved listening to his granddaughter sing. Mr. Cox was an Atlanta Braves fan and liked to watch the Gospel Channel 39. He was a Mason and a charter member of the National World War II Memorial in Washington, DC, and the World War II museum in New Orleans. Fond of children, he was a big supporter of St. Jude Children’s’ Hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Nell T. Cox, Smithville; son, Scott Collins (Jill) Cox, Smithville; sisters, Beverly (Charles) McFadden, Panama and Hot Springs, AR, sister-in-law, Geneva Cox, Memphis; brothers, M. T. “Terrell” (Thelma) Cox, Jr., Raymond and Richard “Dick” (Edna) Cox, Smithville; grandchildren, Karli Elizabeth Cox and Elijah Collins Cox, Smithville; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, George W. Cox.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 4 PM, Wednesday at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Charles Coggin and Bro. Sammy Washburn officiating. Burial will follow in Young Memorial Garden. Pallbearers will be Paul Morrow, Don Barnes, Phil Goodwin, Billy Morrow, Bonnie Joe Coker, John Wolkinson, Dewey Hannon, and Richard Russ. Honorary pallbearers will be George Huffman, Jasper Thompson, Joel Davis, Donald Ray Vandiver, Michael Fikes, Hubert Elliott, and Frank Comer.
Visitation will be from 1 PM until the service hour, Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Relief Fund for rebuilding Smithville.
