Vernon, AL – James Casper Mixon, 93, passed away on February 6, 2025 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Amory, MS and began his new life in heaven. He was born on December 18, 1931 in Hamilton, Alabama to the late James Webster “JW” Mixon and Jessica Northington Mixon.
James grew up in rural Alabama in a huge family with four brothers and six sisters. He was a Patriot and enlisted selflessly into the United States Army and from 1950 until 1952 he put his life on the line for his country, including serving in the Korean Conflict, where he earned a Bronze Star. We was married to his loving wife, Faye Pounders Mixon, who preceded him in death. Later in life, he was also blessed with a marriage to Polly Mixon of Vernon. James loved his family and was a very dependable, generous man who was a great brother, husband, father, and grandfather.
A true man of faith, James always had a smile on his face and would make you laugh. If you asked him ‘how are you doing?’ he would usually answer “I’m fine as froghair”. He worked for many years supporting his family and he worked as a contractor, doing various jobs throughout the region. As his faith in God grew, he lived out his faith and accepted the calling to serve as a Baptist Minister for several years. Nothing in life gave him more satisfaction than to see someone come to an understanding of the Gospel. He was the oldest member of Cason Baptist Church.
In his downtime, besides spending time with family, he loved to read, watch Nascar and football, grilling out and fishing in the peace and quiet. A talented man, he learned to fly an airplane and nothing gave him the feeling of freedom like flying off into the sunset. His family always knew he cared and he wasn’t afraid or too proud to let them know as he often would tell them “Hey Baby” or “Love you too baby”. He was such a wonderful man and his family and friends will miss him so much yet they know where he is because of his love for the Lord. His legacy will live on for generations to come.
He is survived by his wife, Polly Mixon, Vernon, AL; daughter, Gail Brown, Texas; son, Tim Mixon (Doris), West Pointe, MS; step-daughter, Kathy Christian; granddaughter Christi Andres (Darion) Camas, WA, ; granddaughter ,Hollie Mitchell, Atlanta, GA, brothers Kenny Mixon (Jeanette), Grenada, MS, Frank Mixon (Pat), Grenada, MS; sisters, Glenda Prillhart (Ken), Columbus, MS, Patsy Alexander, Ethelsville, AL, and Sheila Bush (Luther), Columbus, MS; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; one great-great grandchild on the way, numerous nieces and nephews.
