Amory – Irene Coker Cox, 97, died on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at North MS Medical Center, Tupelo. Born on June 21, 1915, in Smithville, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Howard and Nola Frances Bowling Coker.
Mrs. Cox was a graduate of Smithville High School, Class of 1932. Growing up working on the family farm with mule-driven plows and having taught in a one-room school, she worked for Amory Garment from 1952 until it closed and began working a second job at Pickle’s Drive-In until the age of 92. Mrs. Cox was Baptist and was a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. Having a big heart and always putting others first, she cherished her family. A wonderful, amazing, and spunky, old-school Southern lady, she was an adopted mother and grandmother to many. An excellent cook, Mrs. Cox enjoyed Bingo, competing in her Bowling League until the age of 94, the Braves, the Bulldogs, and watching the Price Is Right.
She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Elliott (John B. Denley, III), Saltillo; grandchildren, Mike Reese, Gail Earrey (Bill), Mark Wesley Reese (Darlene), Dana Taylor, and Chris Elliott (Gayle); 11 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, her wonderful neighbors and her adopted families at bingo and bowling.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Laymon Cox; daughter, Martha Jean Reese; son-in-law, Billy R. Reese; sister, Orene Addington; and brothers, Howard and Durwood Coker.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday, March 13 at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Tommy Whaley officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rex Coker, Lance McFarling, Bunky Goza, Shawn Reese, Josh Page, and Tray Patterson.
Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Tuesday at the funeral home.
