Amory – Hoyet Evin Hathcock, 84, died on Sunday, June 12, 2011 at Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center in Amory. Born on June 30, 1926, in Monroe County, he was the son of the late Coleman Thomas and Omie Alice Nash Hathcock.
Hoyet was a graduate of Smithville High School and attended Freed Hardeman College, Delta State University and was a graduate of Mississippi State University. He did post graduate work on his Masters at The University of Alabama. He married Sibyl Burrow on July 4, 1947, who survives. He was a teacher, retiring after 23 years where he taught at Caledonia MS from 1964-1966, Pickens County Al from 1970-1972 and at Riverside Junior High School in Tuscaloosa County from 1972 until his retirement in 1988. Hoyet was a minister beginning his ministry in the 1950’s and preached his first sermon in 1952 at Christian Chapel Church of Christ in Monroe County. His ministry began with the Church of Christ in Detroit AL in 1956 then West Chapel in 1957-1959, Leland MS in 1960, Detroit AL in 1961, Caledonia MS in 1962, Leland MS in 1963, Loan Oak in Lowndes County in 1964, Caledonia MS in 1964-65, Mobile AL in 1966-67, Koscuisko MS in 1968, Mobile AL in 1969, Berry AL in 1970-74, Lawson Chapel in Clay County in 1975-83, Detroit AL in 1984, Smithville MS in 1985-2005 and where he served as a substitute minister until 2008. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving under George McArthur Supreme Commander of the Pacific Arena on the USS Antietam in the Pacific Theatre from 1944 until 1945. Mr. Hathcock was faithful in whatever he was doing, to be the best he could and follow God’s will. He loved singing, enjoyed gospel music. Hoyet enjoyed working outside and traveling with his wife.
He is survived by his wife, Sibyl Burrow Hathcock of Amory; his daughter, Teresa Smith (Lex) of Tuscaloosa AL; his sons, Philip T Hathcock (Cindy) of Amory and John M Hathcock (Ellen) of Jacksonville FL; sisters, Bernice Nell McCormick and Delores Cox both of Amory and Joyce Bunch of Tuscaloosa; grandchildren, Elizabeth Connell (Dusty), Emily Beck (Shawn), Laura Mills, Lindsey Cornelson, Sarah Hathcock and Katie Hathcock; great-grandchildren, Savannah Elise Connell, Noah Evin Connell, and Sadie Anne Beck. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held at 2 PM, Wednesday, June 15, at Amory Church of Christ with Mr. James L. Segars and Mr. Philip Hathcock officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope Cemetery.
Visitation will be at Amory Church of Christ on Tuesday, June 14th from 5-8 pm and Wednesday, June 15th from 12-2 pm.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Pierce, B. W. Ausborn, Danny Stephenson, Monty McCormick, David and Charles Holloway, Tom Fair, Lloyd Spann and John Fausz. Honorary pallbearers will be Len Holloway, Gerald Lovern, Dale Wilson, Stephen Bunch and Sonny Riggan.
